Capshot: San Diego Padres New Era x Wilson 59Fifty

One of the latest trends for New Era is to collaborate with other companies in the creation of a 59Fifty cap. This Lids offering is a collaboration between New Era (MLB) and Wilson, best known for their baseball gloves and various other sports goods. Once upon a time Wilson also supplied jerseys for MLB and did so for the Padres of the 70s and 80s.

There are 3 different cap versions of the Wilson collaboration with various levels of leather application; this is probably the cap with the second-most usage of leather. There is a version with full-leather front crown panels (though not a Padres version, much to my own chagrin). A notable material used for the crown of this cap is melton wool. Melton wool provides for a soft, fuzzy feel reminiscent of a vintage/retro cap.

On the wearer’s right (cap left) is a Wilson pin bolted to the cap.

The MLB Batterman logo is done up in the same metallic gold as the rest of the cap.

IMG_5345The underbrim is an interesting dark green which is equal parts throwback-esque and custom. Another notable detail is the interior taping done up in gold. A black sweatband finishes off the cap.

IMG_5346Added to the usual array of interior branding/label patches is a Wilson strip indicating the cap is part of the New Era/Wilson collaboration.

Cap Availability Status: Common

This cap is still generally available at Lids. A word of warning, though…this collaboration and use of leather has bumped the cap’s price up to $50. I’ll also leave it up to you if you want to oil up and break in the brim like your favorite ball glove*.

*I don’t recommend actually doing that.
